Frame Care in the Cold: Protecting Your Glasses

Fall is a season of transition, cozy sweaters, crisp air, and a shift in both style and routine. As temperatures drop, our glasses often face new challenges—fogging up when moving indoors, picking up scratches from scarves and jackets, and even warping from sudden temperature changes. Taking a few preventative steps now will keep your frames in top shape as the weather gets colder.

One of the most common frustrations in cooler weather is fogging. The shift from chilly air outside to heated indoor spaces can instantly cloud your lenses. While it may seem unavoidable, there are ways to minimize it. Anti-fog sprays and wipes help keep lenses clear, and a well-fitting pair of frames reduces the airflow that often contributes to fogging. Even the way you wear your layers matters—scarves and jackets pulled too high can push warm air up into your glasses, so adjusting them slightly can make a difference.

Fall wardrobes also bring new risks for scratches. Cozy knits, scarves, and jackets feel great against the skin, but when they brush against lenses, especially with dust or grit from outside, they can leave behind small marks. The easiest way to avoid this is by treating your glasses with the same care you would any other important accessory. Instead of wiping lenses with your sleeve (and no, we are not saying that you do that ), use a microfiber cloth, and when you’re not wearing your glasses, store them in a case rather than slipping them into a pocket or bag unprotected.

Temperature swings are another factor in the fall. Warm afternoons, cool evenings, and heated indoor spaces mean your glasses are constantly adjusting. Plastic frames and lens coatings can be sensitive to sudden changes, which over time may cause warping or reduce the effectiveness of coatings. Avoid leaving your glasses in the car where temperatures fluctuate the most, and give your lenses a moment to settle before cleaning them to prevent streaking.

Just like you rotate your wardrobe when the seasons change, your frame care routine deserves the same attention. A little extra care now will help your glasses last longer and keep your vision sharp, whether you’re enjoying crisp fall walks or preparing for the winter chill.
