Meet an optical wizard

passion thrives

I love what I do.  (When you meet me, you’ll be able to tell).  I love this industry because it allows me to tap all parts of my brain: the science of optics, the fashion element of eyewear as the main accessory we wear, and the people-connection of working with clients.  As the owner of this special place, I wear many hats: licensed optician, head honcho, designer, master framemaker, consultant, speaker, teacher, master lab technician… and I also do some light plumbing and electrical (ahhh… the life of a small business owner :).

I’ve got my hands in all corners of the optical world and I can use this experience to help fit you with the best eyewear.  I care a lot about my clients and I want them to feel like they are working with someone who is professional, knowledgeable, resourceful, helpful, fun and kind.

Her-story

1989

MY FIRST PAIR OF EYEGLASSES

I was born and raised in Regina, SK and started wearing eyeglasses when I was 7.  This is where the seeds were first planted towards a career in optics.  I originally wanted to be an optometrist but decided that I needed to be in a career where I could work with my hands and create.  Becoming an optician was the perfect fit.

1994

GRANVILLE EYELAND OPTICIANS & FRAMEMAKERS

In 1994 the business was born on Granville Island from an avant-garde German trained optician Klaus Sebök.  The original business name was "Granville Eyeland Opticians & Framemakers" and being on Granville Island, the name was quite clever!

2000

GRADUATION FROM DOUGLAS COLLEGE

While I was in the Dispensing Optician program, I met Klaus during a seminar on framemaking.  I was so inspired that I actually turned to my friend that day and said “I’m going to own that guy’s business one day”.  I now knew my path.

2001

WORKING AT EYELAND

After working in a couple of other stores through practicums and employment, I began working at Eyeland.  This was where I really made a name for myself as one of a handful of master makers of handcrafted eyewear in the world.

2007

ASSOCIATION WORK

I joined the Opticians Association of BC as a board member and eventually became the president for 2 years and helped draft new industry regulations and bylaws as a stakeholder resulting in a major increase in opticians’ scope of practice to include Sight Testing in BC.

2008

BOUGHT THE BUSINESS

One month after I turned 30, I signed the papers to take full ownership of the business, and then Klaus retired.

2014

MOVED TO GASTOWN

After 20 years on Granville Island, we finally outgrew our little spot in the Net Loft and needed to expand to a larger space with enough room to house our retail store, framemaking studio + optical lab, so we moved to one of Vancouver's trendiest neighbourhoods, Gastown.

2016

REBRANDED TO MOSH FRAMEMAKERS

I was now ready to evolve from Eyeland into our true identity....MOSH!!  Mosh is a play on my last name: while I was growing up no one could ever pronounce "Moshurchak" correctly so throughout my life my nickname has been "Mosh".  So, it makes perfect sense for us to rebrand into a name that reflects our most unique attribute: MOSH Framemakers.

2021

POST-COVID PIVOT

I think many people reflected on their lives in the years following the Covid-19 pandemic. I wanted to lean into an atelier experience with one-on-one appointment consultations because I found that they offered me the best way to interact with my clients, catch up, and help them update their eyewear wardrobe.  I found this new location that allows me to simplify the business so I can focus on the things I love the most: making eyewear and working with my clients.

TODAY

AN INTENTIONAL COMPANY OF ONE

I want a business that focuses on relationships vs transactions.  Somewhere special you can come to have fun, know that you are seeing the passionate owner behind the vision, and can see a magnificently curated collection of independent brands from around the world.  And along with the imported brands, I also make my own handcrafted eyewear.  My reputation for creating one of a kind, tailored, artisanal eyewear makes me a go-to creator of specific, unique eyewear for the film world and has been seen in TV shows and feature films.

The Team

While you’ll only see Sara in the showroom, lots happens in the background and she can only make it look easy with help of our behind-the-scenes team:

Jon Victorino

Framemaking Assistant, Manager of Metals

Jon has worn glasses for half his life until he had laser eye surgery in 2014. Now he helps make them! He has a natural affinity for all that is hands-on, having graduated with a Diploma in Advanced Music Production at Nimbus School of Recording Arts in 2012 and delving into his current endeavour in blacksmithing. When he is not crafting custom frames in the studio, you’ll find him at home in the garage forging swords or seeking inspiration out in nature. His favourite part about working at Mosh is the transferability of technical skills and knowledge that can be applied to all arts and crafts and the motivation to dedicate time and patience to create a quality product.
